Hints and tips

Choosing a conservatory may seem like a daunting decision, but it doesn’t have to be. To ensure you make the right choice, simply follow our top tips.

1. Bear in mind the intended use.

What purpose do you want your new conservatory to fulfil? Do you want it to be a playroom? A dining area? An office? A second living room? Or an all year round, all weather extension to the garden? Whatever your answer this should help determine how large your conservatory needs to be as well as which style, layout and materials will work best.

2. Think about the position.

Conservatories that face south receive more sun than those facing north. As such, they may need greater levels of adequate ventilation ideally supported by blinds. For ultimate levels of climate control, you could also opt for performance glass instead of polycarbonate glazing as this offers greater levels of comfort.

3. Size matters.

Don’t get carried away with the intended size of your conservatory. Ideally it should complement your home and garden – rather than dominating them. In fact, once you’ve decided on the design and size of your new conservatory, canvass the opinions of friends or family members.

4. Don’t forget the glazing.

In creating a conservatory, many people think about the size and style but overlook the glazing. Bear in mind that this forgotten feature will have a major impact on your conservatory’s practicality.  Glass offers greater thermal and sound insulation along with enhanced aesthetics whilst polycarbonate is tough and more affordable.

5. Remember the need for ventilation.

If you want to reduce the risk of condensation in your conservatory make sure you consider sufficient ventilation. A roof vent lets fresh air in whilst keeping the elements and insects out. Alternatively, you could consider roof fans or an air conditioning unit.

6. Cheap isn’t always cheerful.

Just as with most things in life, when it comes to conservatories you tend to get what you pay for. With this in mind, don’t automatically opt for the ‘cheapest’ company unless its products also happen to be superior. Also make sure your chosen installer can meet your timescales. You don’t want the installation to drag on and on, leaving your home looking like a building site for any longer than is necessary.
